OUR BEGINNING Ragan & Christi Bond, married at age 20 during their sophomore year at Texas State, graduated together in 1987 with BBA (Marketing) degrees. The couple almost accidentally got started in the coffee roasting business. After spending fifteen years as a commodities trader in the energy sector, the Bonds moved their family from Houston to small-town Brenham, Texas. In 2001, Christi Bond and her sister opened a small coffee shop called Main Street Coffee & Trading/Independence Coffee Co. Shortly thereafter, Ragan began roasting coffee for their shop in his garage, producing 1,800 lbs. of coffee that first year on a 10 lb. Ambex roaster.
OUR GROWTH In 2018, Christi and Ragan opened a specialty coffee and tea retail destination in Brenham, Texas, called Black Truck '48 Coffee & Tea Market. The name pays homage to the 1948 Ford black truck the Bonds originally used for coffee delivery, which is pictured on Independence Coffee bags. In 2019, Christi and Ragan Bond were named SBA Persons of the Year for Texas. Together with their growing team of 32, they custom and craft roasted a record 700,000 lbs. of coffee that year. Moving forward, Independence Coffee Co. continues to innovate in 2020 by replacing their current single-serve cups with new coffee pods.
OUR MISSION TO YOU While Independence Coffee Co.'s roastery is small by most standards, the company sees this as a true advantage. Their size and hands-on approach to coffee and tea allows them to meet the high standards of both beginning and seasoned coffee enthusiasts. Independence Coffee's coffees are packaged within hours of leaving the roasters, often while still warm, enabling the company to deliver their freshly roasted coffees the same day to some bed and breakfasts, gourmet markets, and grocery markets.
Independence Coffee Co.'s mission is to create a passionate community of coffee and tea enthusiasts by providing high-quality, hand-roasted and packaged 'world' coffees and hand-blended tea products, on time, while honoring traditional 'old school' roasting and blending methods that pay respect to coffee's rich history - all while having a blast doing it.
THE INDEPENDENCE ROAST Independence Coffee has only three roasters on staff - their original roaster and two others trained in all facets of the roasting and blending process. This allows them to blend and roast each batch of coffee the same way, every single time, ensuring that when a customer finds a favorite roast, it will embody the same roast characteristics each time. The 'Independence Roast' uses time and temperature to guide each roast through several stages, with the increased time commitment resulting in a deep-roasted coffee that enhances the coffee experience.
LASTING FRESHNESS Independence Coffee's 50-count cases are individually wrapped and flushed with nitrogen, allowing each to have a one-year expiration date. The packaging clearly identifies which Independence Coffee the customer is about to enjoy, making this an excellent choice for offices or gatherings with family and friends.
OUR COMMITMENT Independence Coffee's approach is simple: they give back to local organizations within their community. Through a licensing agreement with Baylor University, they have successfully funded preservation and maintenance projects for the original home of Baylor University in Independence, Texas. They also support the Brenham High School Special Needs Program's 'Gathering Grounds' coffee cart project, and contribute to the Boys & Girls Club of Washington County.
