Tyme Foods' Zaatar Spice Blend is true to the Levant heritage of Zaatar, with the flavor modulated after three mainstay ingredients of genuine Zaatar herb, often referred to as wild thyme or Biblical Hyssop (scientific name Origanum syriacum), Pure Sumac, and roasted sesame seeds, and optional Mediterranean unrefined sea salt.
Our Zaatar blends do not contain wheat or other fillers (often unknown in other mixes). They contain no substitute spices that try to mimic the flavor of the mainstay Zaatar herb ingredient native to the East Mediterranean. No citric acid is used in place of a bright lemony pure Sumac ingredient. No added oils are used as preservatives or to cover for bland flavorless bottom-shelf herb or spices. The oil in our mix is the high essential oil content inherent in the Zaatar herb leaves which is the source of flavor, as is the case with quality herbs.
Tyme Foods' Zatar Spice Blend is Made Strictly of the Following Pictured Ingredients: Real Hyssop - Syrian Oregano (Origanum syriacum) with High Essential Oil Content, Pure Sumac Spice - Lebanese Grown, and Mild Roasted Sesame Seeds. Absolutely No Fillers or Substitutes.
The Zaatar herb is grown organically and sustainably from seeds of wild Syrian Oregano found on the mountainous hills of Southern Lebanon (Upper Galilee) and is known to produce very flavorful herb because of its high essential oil content (about 1 gram per ounce, and 4 to 40 times multiple the essential oil content in other brands).
The sumac is grown at the base of Mount Hermon and is pure and salt free, offering a delicious lemony taste without a citric acidity. Our sesame source may change from one year to the next depending on harvests and processing qualities. We also seek the correct mild roasted flavor to not overpower the Zaatar herb in the mix, and importantly, mix the right portion for best mix flavor and texture.
Zaatar Spice enjoys a reputation for health benefits and is considered a "brainy food". The essential oils of Zaatar the herb (Origanum syriacum ingredient) are active ingredients in medicines and food preservatives. The composition of the essential oils found in the Zaatar herb plant grown in the East-Mediterranean is mainly thymol or carvacrol, followed by other compounds.
